In Tannenbaum (2004), Chapter 1, pg 10, it states for the Rules of Information, Rule 4, "The process of deriving information from other information should be discouraged; that is, information should always be derived from data." I would challenge this in that as scholars we review "information" which is presented by others and accept some statements and reject others. In th rejection we disprove by showing opposing data, however acceptance and building upon acceptable scholarly information is daily practice. me 27 Sep 2006

My initial reaction to Rule 4 matches your sentiment. WHy should information always be derived from (raw?) data? I am interested to see what it meant by the "information webs" & how these are negative or not optimal for a KM environment.
